Empowering Young Peer Supporters: SEGi Facilitates Leadership Camp at SMK St. Xavier

A Peer Support Leadership Camp was recently held at SMK St. Xavier, where members of the school’s Peer Support Club received impactful training designed to strengthen their skills and confidence as young mental health advocates. SEGi was honoured to be invited to facilitate this meaningful initiative, which underscores the importance of empowering youth through education, compassion, and practical skills.

The session was led by Mr. Jivanishenthiran Rajathurai, Executive, Licensed Counsellor, and SEGian Care Club Advisor, together with Ms. Justine, Programme Leader of Psychology. Adding to the camp’s energy and purpose was the newly established SEGian Care Club Penang, marking one of its very first outreach activities. This collaboration offered SEGi students the opportunity to extend their classroom learning into real-world advocacy while connecting with the wider community.

Representing SEGi were dedicated SEGian Care Club volunteers:

  • Avinashmann A/L Supramaniam – Diploma in Culinary Arts (DICA)
  • Dillan Singh – Diploma in Culinary Arts (DICA)
  • Kishornat A/L Regunath – Diploma in Information Technology (DIIT)
  • Jayashre A/P Selvakumar – Diploma in Hotel Management (DIHM)

Together with the facilitators, they guided participants through dynamic and interactive activities, including role-plays, group discussions, and practical exercises. These sessions introduced essential peer helping skills such as attentive listening, open-ended questioning, reflection of feelings, and an understanding of peer supporter responsibilities. Key areas like confidentiality, setting healthy boundaries, and referral protocols were also emphasised to prepare students for real-life peer support scenarios.

The camp successfully equipped students with tools to enhance their empathy, emotional intelligence, and leadership capacity, helping them foster a more caring and supportive school environment. Beyond knowledge transfer, the experience also nurtured confidence, resilience, and a sense of responsibility among participants.

This collaborative effort contributes directly to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being – by promoting early peer support and mental wellness among adolescents.
  • SDG 4: Quality Education – by providing life skills, leadership training, and emotional literacy through experiential learning
