Empowering Early Childhood Educators: Mental Health for Children Seminar at SEGi College Penang

The Mental Health for Children Seminar, held at SEGi College Penang, provided an engaging and impactful platform for early childhood educators to deepen their understanding of mental health challenges faced by children and to learn practical strategies for addressing these issues. Led by speaker Ng Wei Yee and organised with the objective of enhancing educators’ ability to support young learners, the session combined psychoeducation, interactive activities, and discussions on self-care for educators themselves.

Participants were introduced to various mental health disorders in children, alongside strategies such as self-compassion, empathetic listening, medication, parental training, and exposure therapy to navigate these challenges. Educators actively participated in activities designed to foster empathy, including colouring, pizza imagery, and word spelling exercises that encouraged them to channel their inner four-year-old selves. These activities highlighted the importance of creating supportive environments for children without stigma or undue pressure, fostering a deeper connection to the emotional experiences of young learners.

The seminar also prioritised the well-being of educators, with discussions on cultivating self-care and resilience as future interventionists. Techniques such as journaling and practising self-compassion were shared, emphasising the belief that educators who nurture their own mental health are better equipped to support the same in children. Through case scenarios, reflection questions, and a vibrant exchange of insights, the seminar achieved its goal of promoting empathy, understanding, and practical solutions for educators working with children.

This seminar aligns with the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being – Promoting mental health and well-being among children and educators.
  • SDG 4: Quality Education – Equipping educators with the tools and understanding needed to foster inclusive, supportive learning environments.
  • SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities – Addressing the stigma surrounding mental health disorders and advocating for equal opportunities for children with diverse needs.
