A 2,000-Year-Old Tradition—Reimagined for Today’s World

SEGi College Penang brought creativity and cultural appreciation to life with the Radiant Creations for CNY: Lantern Crafting Workshop, a hands-on experience celebrating Chinese New Year traditions. Held on 22 January 2025 at Greenhall, this workshop allowed students and staff to craft stunning lanterns using red envelopes (angpow)—a symbol of good fortune, prosperity, and hope for the new year.

Guided by Justine Ng Siew Keow, Program Leader from the Faculty of Education, Languages, Psychology, and Music, participants delved into the symbolism of lantern-making, learning how light and intricate designs represent optimism and success in Chinese culture. Crafting these lanterns was not just an artistic endeavour but a meaningful way to connect with heritage, creativity, and sustainability.

Lantern-making holds deep historical significance, with Chinese New Year celebrations dating back over 2,000 years. Engaging in such cultural traditions fosters a sense of unity and appreciation for diversity, which is key in today’s interconnected world. According to a UNESCO report, cultural activities enhance social inclusion and cross-cultural understanding, making them crucial in educational institutions.

Beyond cultural learning, the workshop embraced sustainability by repurposing red envelopes into decorative lanterns, reinforcing the message of resourcefulness and responsible consumption. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) emphasises that creative reuse of materials reduces waste and promotes eco-conscious practices, aligning with global sustainability efforts.

The handcrafted lanterns were later displayed around the campus, adding a festive atmosphere while serving as a reminder of the importance of tradition, community, and creative expression. Events like these encourage students to embrace cultural heritage, engage in artistic expression, and participate in sustainable practices, creating a well-rounded and socially aware learning environment.

SEGi remains committed to fostering cultural appreciation, creativity, and environmental responsibility. By integrating heritage-based learning with sustainability, the institution continues to empower students with the knowledge and experiences that extend beyond academics. This workshop was not just about celebrating Chinese New Year—it was about preserving traditions, strengthening community ties, and inspiring future generations to innovate with purpose.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
