SEGi College Penang recently hosted a webinar on Career Prospects in Occupational Safety and Health after SPM, conducted by Madam Tun Noraihan from our School of Allied Health Sciences. The objective of this session was to educate Malaysian school-leavers on prospects in the Occupational Safety and Health field.
All industries encounter some safety hazards. The most important aspect of good occupational health–and safety policy is identifying these hazards and ensuring that employees have the training, safety equipment, and other resources needed to work safely. Failure to implement effective policies and precautions can lead to injuries, reduced productivity due to the absence or loss of skilled labour, workers’ compensation claims, and possible penalties from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Malaysia.
Why Occupational Safety and Health is important and becomes a Major National Concern
In 2021, the government launched the Occupational Safety and Health Master Plan (OSHMP25), a five-year initiative to drive safe and healthy work culture in the workplace. This is a testament to the government’s responsibility to take occupational-safety-and-health matters seriously and to the fact that many career opportunities exist in OSH.
What Career Opportunities await OSH Graduates?
Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) professionals usually spend their careers in the public, private and non-profit sectors. There are countless industries that OSH graduates can penetrate, such as Construction, Manufacturing, Healthcare, Oil & Gas, and many more. In certain situations, OSH professionals provide services to an entire industry (a school district, for instance) rather than an individual organisation. OSH professionals can also specialise in specific areas, such as ergonomics, first-aid, and other fields that affect workplace safety and health.
