SEGi College Penang recently organised the “Corpus Meets ChatGPT: Turning Student Writing into Localised Teaching Resources” workshop, bringing together English language educators to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) and corpus-informed teaching can transform language education. Organised in collaboration with the Penang English Language Learning and Teaching Association (PELLTA), the workshop reflected the college’s commitment to equipping educators with innovative teaching strategies for the digital age.
The workshop was facilitated by Dr Wong Wei Lun Colin, Senior Lecturer from the Faculty of Education, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). Through an engaging and practical session, participants were introduced to the concept of AI learner corpora and discovered how ChatGPT can be integrated into corpus-informed teaching to create meaningful, localised learning resources that address students’ actual language needs.
Participants gained hands-on experience in collecting and organising authentic student writing samples before analysing learner language to identify recurring linguistic patterns and common errors. They then explored how ChatGPT could assist in interpreting corpus findings, generating contextualised teaching materials, and supporting lesson planning based on real classroom data.
Designed as an interactive workshop, participants worked on their own laptops while applying AI tools and corpus analysis techniques to authentic classroom scenarios. This practical approach enabled educators to experience first-hand how emerging technologies can streamline instructional design, enhance teaching efficiency, and personalise language learning for students.
The workshop successfully enhanced participants’ understanding of corpus-informed language teaching while demonstrating the potential of generative AI in developing high-quality, localised educational resources. Educators left the session equipped with practical strategies that can be immediately implemented in their own classrooms, strengthening both teaching effectiveness and student learning outcomes.
Beyond professional development, the programme also strengthened networking among English language educators and reinforced the collaborative partnership between SEGi College Penang and PELLTA. By fostering knowledge sharing and educational innovation, the collaboration continues to support the advancement of English language education in the region.
