SEGi College Penang proudly celebrates the achievement of Ms. Nuwethaa Kumaraguru, a student from the Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) programme, who successfully presented her research at the 6th International Conference on Psychology, Counselling, and Social Work (ICPCSW) 2026. The virtual conference, organised by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), was held on 8–9 July 2026 and brought together researchers, academics, and professionals from around the world to discuss emerging issues in psychology and the social sciences.
Ms. Nuwethaa presented her research titled “Exploring the Emotional Dependency Formed on Fictional Characters Among Young Adults,” which examined the growing phenomenon of parasocial relationships—one-sided emotional bonds that individuals develop with fictional characters. As digital media, streaming platforms, gaming, and social media continue to influence modern lifestyles, understanding these emotional connections has become increasingly relevant within contemporary psychological research.
Her study explored how emotional attachment to fictional characters may influence the emotional experiences and psychological well-being of young adults. By investigating this emerging area of psychology, the research contributes to a deeper understanding of how digital entertainment shapes emotions, identity, and interpersonal experiences in today’s increasingly connected world.
