Penang, 6 July 2026, the Department of Computing, SEGi College Penang, proudly celebrates the achievement of its Artificial Intelligence (AI) students, who won the Silver Award at the 2nd International Informatics Creativity Competition (2I2C) 2026.
Organised by the Faculty of Information Science, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Cawangan Kedah, the competition was held at the Penang Waterfront Convention Centre (PWCC) in collaboration with the Perbadanan Perpustakaan Awam Pulau Pinang (PPAPP) during the Penang ASEAN Book Fair 2026. The event, themed “Reimagining Information Literacy and Digital Citizenship for an Informed Society,” provided a platform for students and researchers to showcase innovative solutions in artificial intelligence, data science, and digital technologies.
Representing the Department of Computing, Lee Zhong Yang and Kwok Tze Xuan presented ASLI (AI-Assisted Language Interpreter), an AI-powered system designed to recognise Malaysian Sign Language (Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia – BIM) and enhance communication accessibility for the Deaf community. The project applies data science, machine learning, and a Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) deep learning model to analyse BIM gesture datasets, enabling accurate recognition of both static and dynamic sign language movements. By leveraging artificial intelligence, this products aims to reduce communication barriers while supporting inclusive education and encouraging more people to learn basic Malaysian Sign Language.
Competing alongside participants from higher education institutions across Malaysia, the SEGi College Penang team impressed the judging panel with the project’s innovation, technical implementation, and social impact, earning the Silver Award. This achievement reflects the Department of Computing’s commitment to nurturing graduates with strong expertise in artificial intelligence and data science while developing technology-driven solutions that address real-world challenges.
