Throwback to 10th February, learning moved far beyond textbooks when Psychology and Education students from SEGi College Penang embarked on an educational visit to Penjara Pulau Pinang. The programme was designed to provide students with real-world exposure to the criminal justice system and to deepen their understanding of human behaviour within correctional settings.
During the visit, students gained rare firsthand insights into the daily routines of inmates, prison regulations, and types of punishment implemented within the institution. Dedicated Prison Officers guided participants through informative sessions, explaining how security measures are balanced with rehabilitation efforts aimed at preparing inmates for life after release.
For students specialising in Forensic and Criminal Psychology, the experience was particularly meaningful. Concepts previously learned in lectures—such as offender behaviour, risk assessment, and rehabilitation models—came to life through direct observation and professional sharing, transforming theory into tangible understanding.
The visit also encouraged thoughtful discussions on empathy, second chances, and community acceptance. Students were challenged to reflect on the social stigma faced by ex-offenders and the important role psychologists and educators play in supporting reintegration into society.
Beyond academic learning, the programme highlighted the human side of correctional work. Students witnessed how structured education, counselling, and skills training within the prison system can contribute to positive behavioural change and reduce reoffending.
Overall, the visit to Penjara Pulau Pinang was more than an academic activity—it was a transformative experience that inspired students to become future educators and psychologists committed to building a more informed, inclusive, and compassionate society.
