From Zumba to Kindness: SEGi Students Champion Dementia Awareness

The spirit of compassion and community came alive at the Dancing with Dementia Funwalk & Food Fair, hosted by Golden Sails Elderly Care & Wellness Centre in Jelutong. The event brought together students, volunteers, and the community for a vibrant morning filled with meaningful activities — all in the name of raising awareness and support for dementia care and elderly wellness.

Adding to the festive atmosphere was a colorful food fair, where a variety of stalls offered delicious treats and refreshments. Here, SEGi students from the Diploma in Psychology programme and members of the SEGi Care Club played a vital role, helping with booth operations and keeping the energy high throughout the event. Their dedication ensured that the food fair was not just about food, but also about fostering connection and joy among the community.

The students’ contributions were guided by Mr. Jivanishenthiran Rajathurai, Executive, Licensed Counsellor & SEGi Care Club Advisor, and Ms. Justine, Programme Leader of Psychology. Together, they encouraged students to step out of the classroom and into real-world experiences, where empathy, teamwork, and leadership could truly shine.

More than just volunteering, this event gave SEGi students the chance to immerse themselves in community service that went beyond surface-level participation. They had the opportunity to advocate for dementia and mental health awareness, connect meaningfully with the elderly, and develop essential skills in teamwork, compassion, and social responsibility.

The Dancing with Dementia Funwalk & Food Fair was not only a fundraiser but also a heartfelt reminder that small acts of kindness and service can spark big changes. For the SEGi Psychology students and Care Club members, it was an unforgettable experience — one that blended fun, learning, and service into a meaningful step towards building a more compassionate society.
