Bridging Hearts, Breaking Stigma: SEGi Students Connect Through Mental Health Outreach

On 17 June 2025, a group of SEGi student volunteers joined members of the public in a heartfelt outreach initiative at the D’Home Mental Health Association, Penang. Titled the D’Home Chat & Connect Visit, this initiative offered more than just a chance to engage — it became a safe space where empathy, inclusion, and humanity took centre stage.

Organised by the D’Home Mental Health Association, the session brought together 17 participants for a two-hour interactive gathering aimed at reducing stigma and supporting mental well-being through meaningful social connection.

Designed with purpose and compassion, the visit encouraged patients, caregivers, and volunteers to engage in casual, interest-driven conversations within a group setting. These light-hearted exchanges helped de-stigmatise mental illness, reframing participants not as patients, but as individuals with stories, personalities, and shared experiences.

“It wasn’t about giving advice or fixing problems — it was about being present, listening, and letting others feel seen and heard,” said one SEGi student volunteer.

The programme aligned with several core objectives:

  • Promote social inclusion through interactive, peer-based engagement

  • Provide a relaxed space for both patients and caregivers to unwind

  • Build self-esteem and foster a sense of belonging among participants

  • Minimise identity-based stigma by prioritising shared human connection

This community-focused activity also provided student volunteers with a powerful experiential learning opportunity, reinforcing the value of social responsibility, active listening, and compassionate care — all vital qualities for future professionals in education, psychology, healthcare, and beyond.
