Student-Built AI Just Changed the Game in Digital Health

Two students from the Bachelor in Artificial Intelligence programme at SEGi have earned international acclaim for their breakthrough innovation, securing a Silver Medal at the prestigious International Innovative Design Expo (IIDE) 2025, hosted virtually by Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM). Their project, titled “WHOLE AI Health Companion”, stood out in the Artificial Intelligence category for its vision, impact, and alignment with global healthcare needs.

Melvin Lee and Stefani Ang’s AI-powered solution is designed to be more than just a digital tool—it’s a holistic personal health companion. The system monitors real-time health data, offers personalised medical insights, detects early symptoms, and integrates mental wellness support to promote proactive self-care. By bridging intelligent technology with daily health needs, the WHOLE AI Health Companion responds to the urgent call for accessible, preventive, and inclusive healthcare.

This innovation resonates strongly with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, and SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure. According to the World Health Organization, at least half the world’s population lacks access to essential healthcare services. AI solutions like this can help close that gap, especially in underserved communities where mobile technology is often more accessible than traditional medical infrastructure.

Beyond its functionality, the project reflects the forward-thinking direction of SEGi College Penang’s Artificial Intelligence programme—where students are encouraged to innovate with purpose and design with empathy. As the global digital health market is projected to exceed USD 500 billion by 2027, preparing students to contribute meaningfully to this booming sector is not just strategic—it’s necessary.

Melvin and Stefani’s achievement is a powerful reminder of how education, when combined with innovation and social responsibility, can unlock real-world impact. Their success not only puts a spotlight on local talent but also demonstrates how Malaysian students can lead globally relevant change.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being
SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
SDG 4 – Quality Education
