Real-World Learning Starts With Real-World Partners

SEGi has reaffirmed its commitment to producing industry-ready graduates through the renewed signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with The Prestige Hotel Penang. This strengthened partnership builds on a successful two-year collaboration and underscores SEGi’s mission to integrate real-world industry exposure into academic learning — a model that continues to drive impactful results for students in the field of hospitality and tourism.

This renewed agreement ensures students are not only equipped with theoretical knowledge but also immersed in hands-on experiences through project-based learning, site visits, and mentorships led by seasoned professionals. Such initiatives directly address the urgent global need for practical, future-ready education. According to the International Labour Organization, over 40% of young workers are underemployed or trapped in insecure jobs (ILO, 2023). By building strong industry-academia partnerships, institutions can close this skills gap and align education with the demands of an evolving global workforce.

The official signing ceremony brought together Leong Mi-Chelle, Principal of SEGi College Penang, and Melvin Ooi, General Manager of The Prestige Hotel, and was witnessed by Programme Leader Lee Chin Ching and Jessica Koay, Administrative cum Financial Controller of the hotel. Adding to the significance of the occasion was the presence of global culinary icon and TV personality Chef Martin Yan, whose participation reinforced the event’s industry prestige and international relevance.

This collaboration is more than a contract — it is a statement of purpose. It reflects SEGi’s broader vision to prepare students for meaningful careers, while also supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. By embedding industry immersion into the learning journey, the partnership promotes quality education, decent work opportunities, and a culture of institutional collaboration for mutual growth and impact.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
SDG 4 – Quality Education

SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth

SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals
