SEGi continues to set new benchmarks in early childhood education with its latest initiative, Thrive to Learn: Teaching and Learning Practice at Melody Kindyland. This hands-on session provided students from the Diploma in Early Childhood Education (DECE) with an immersive teaching experience, bridging theory with practical application. Held on 17 February 2025, the session successfully introduced foundational mathematical concepts to 3-4-year-old children, reinforcing SEGi’s commitment to producing highly skilled and innovative educators.
Early education plays a pivotal role in cognitive and social development, with studies showing that 90% of brain development occurs before the age of five. By engaging young children in interactive activities focused on counting, shapes, and patterns, the session helped lay the groundwork for future learning. Research by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) highlights that early mathematical understanding significantly impacts later academic achievement, making such initiatives crucial in fostering lifelong learning.
Beyond enhancing young learners’ numeracy skills, this initiative also sharpened the teaching abilities of DECE students, equipping them with practical classroom strategies and real-world experience. Interactive methodologies, including hands-on activities and group collaboration, ensured a stimulating environment where children remained engaged and enthusiastic. The session also highlighted the need for smooth transitions between activities, an essential skill for aspiring educators to master.
Incorporating technology into early education is essential, with the World Bank reporting that children who engage with digital learning tools develop stronger cognitive skills. Future sessions will see DECE students integrating educational videos, interactive apps, and visual aids, enhancing young children’s engagement while keeping teaching methods aligned with modern educational trends.
The initiative underscores the importance of quality early childhood education, aligning with Quality Education (SDG 4) by ensuring young learners receive strong foundational learning experiences. It also fosters Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8) by preparing skilled educators to meet the increasing demand for early childhood professionals. Additionally, through partnerships with learning centres like Melody Kindyland, this initiative embodies Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17), demonstrating how academic institutions and early education providers can work together to drive impactful learning outcomes.
As the demand for well-trained early childhood educators grows, initiatives like Thrive to Learn ensure that future educators develop the skills, adaptability, and innovative mindset needed to excel. With a strong emphasis on interactive and technology-enhanced learning, SEGi College Penang remains at the forefront of preparing educators who will shape the next generation of learners, fostering a future where every child has access to quality education from the very start.
This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
