SEGi College Penang celebrated Valentine’s Day in a way that went beyond romance, embracing love, appreciation, and kindness in all forms. Held on 14 February 2025 at Green Hall, the event brought together students and staff to express gratitude and strengthen connections within the campus community. Organised by the Student Affairs Officer, the celebration featured engaging activities, including Love Bingo and handwritten love cards, encouraging participants to share heartfelt messages with those who have made an impact in their lives.
More than just a celebration, this event reinforced the importance of emotional well-being and social cohesion. Research by the World Health Organization (WHO) highlights that social connections and expressions of gratitude significantly boost mental health and overall happiness. By creating a space where students and staff could appreciate one another, the event fostered a culture of kindness, inclusivity, and meaningful relationships—all essential for a thriving and supportive learning environment.
To add to the spirit of the occasion, Lily Lane Florist was invited to set up a booth, offering participants a chance to gift flowers as a symbol of love, friendship, and appreciation. This partnership also reflected the importance of supporting local businesses and encouraging sustainable gifting practices, aligning with global efforts to promote ethical consumption. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) reports that locally sourced products reduce carbon footprints and contribute to sustainable economies.
Beyond traditional Valentine’s Day themes, the event emphasised inclusivity and diversity, ensuring that everyone, regardless of background, had the opportunity to participate. Expressions of love and gratitude are universal, and this celebration encouraged students and staff to acknowledge the people who make a difference in their lives. According to a Harvard Study of Adult Development, individuals with strong social relationships tend to live longer and experience higher levels of well-being. Creating events that encourage genuine human connection is crucial in fostering healthy and supportive communities.
The success of this event further reinforces the role of educational institutions in shaping holistic individuals. While academics remain a core focus, ensuring that students develop social intelligence, emotional resilience, and a sense of belonging is equally vital. The ability to express gratitude, build strong relationships, and appreciate the people around us is a skill that extends far beyond the classroom.
SEGi continues to champion initiatives that blend cultural celebrations, personal development, and sustainability, proving that education is more than just knowledge—it’s about building communities that thrive on kindness, inclusivity, and shared experiences. By embracing the true meaning of Valentine’s Day, the event succeeded in creating a positive, connected, and emotionally enriching experience for all.
This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
