DECE and DIEE students from SEGi College Penang’s School of Education and School of Engineering organised a community service event titled “Blood, Organ Donation, Stem Cell Registry Campaign” with the collaboration of a few hospitals and the Red Crescent Organization.
The event was held at Auditorium Hospital Bukit Mertajam on 9 October 2022. The main objective of this event was to raise public awareness of the importance of stem cell registry and blood donation.
199 people registered during the event, and only 150 volunteers could donate blood successfully. The rest 36 of those volunteers have turned away because of a medical condition that made them ineligible.
The volunteers were from the hospitals, the Malaysian Red Crescent Society, and the students from SEGi College Penang. Among the 150 blood donors that were able to donate blood successfully, 36 were from Hospital Sungai Bakap, 45 were from Hospital Kulim, and 65 were from Hospital Bukit Mertajam.
This charity event raised public awareness of the importance of stem cell registry and blood donation. Furthermore, our SEGi College students gained significant experience organising community-based events by collaborating with NGOs, hospitals, etc. This great exposure will enhance the students’ time management, social, communication, and leadership skills.
