As part of SEGi College Penang’s commitment to experiential learning, student Tan Yi Ting participated as a volunteer during the George Town Heritage Celebrations (GTHC) 2026, held from 4–7 July 2026. Organised by George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI), the annual celebration commemorated George Town’s inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the inspiring theme “Kongsi Cerita”, which encouraged the public to appreciate the stories, traditions, and cultural practices that have shaped the city’s rich multicultural heritage.
Throughout the four-day celebration, Tan Yi Ting was stationed at St. George’s Church, Loo Pun Hong, and the Kwangtung & Tengchow Association, where she supported the Historic Buildings Open House programme. Her role involved welcoming visitors, providing information about the heritage sites, assisting with visitor management, and ensuring the smooth operation of the event alongside organisers and fellow volunteers.
The volunteering experience provided valuable real-world exposure to heritage conservation and cultural tourism. By interacting with heritage practitioners, community members, and visitors from diverse backgrounds, the student strengthened essential skills in communication, teamwork, customer service, and problem-solving while gaining a deeper appreciation of Penang’s unique cultural landscape.
Beyond developing professional competencies, the programme highlighted the importance of preserving historical landmarks and safeguarding cultural heritage for future generations. The experience reinforced how sustainable tourism and community engagement play vital roles in protecting the identity and legacy of world heritage sites.
The George Town Heritage Celebrations also demonstrated the value of experiential learning beyond the classroom. Through active community involvement, students were able to connect academic knowledge with practical experience while developing a greater sense of civic responsibility and cultural appreciation.
