SEGi College Kuala Lumpur (SEGi KL), Malaysia’s leading private educational institution, has announced a new collaboration with the University of Science Malaysia (USM) to offer pre- and post-registered nursing degrees. This is a watershed moment in Malaysian nursing education, where collaboration between public and private universities is uncommon.
SEGi KL and USM have signed a memorandum of understanding, and the nursing programme will be entirely derived from USM. This means that programme participants will benefit from USM’s well-established learning culture organisation, and the curriculum and syllabus will be benchmarked to USM’s quality standard.
SEGi KL’s nursing programme is Malaysia’s only private institution to be approved by USM to offer a nursing programme. The programme is intended for working nurses and nurses with a nursing diploma who want to pursue a BSc Nursing degree. Fresh STPM students are also encouraged to enrol in this programme in order to graduate with a USM branding certificate.
Global shifts in the nursing profession are favouring service-based, high-quality therapeutic care. To be successful, nurses must obtain a nursing degree rather than a diploma. Nursing graduates from SEGi KL are employed in both the public and private sectors, as evidenced by their alumni records.
SEGi KL is confident that, after more than four decades, they are a mature and responsible organisation, and SEGi is proud to announce the new USM nursing degree and its dual recognition. This collaboration gives aspirant nurses the opportunity to earn a nursing degree from a reputable institution and gain international recognition.
According to Malaysia’s Ministry of Higher Education, the number of students enrolled in nursing programmes has steadily increased over the years. Malaysia had 41,393 nursing students in 2020, with a projected increase to 42,469 in 2021. With the collaboration of SEGi KL and USM, there is no doubt that more students will be drawn to SEGi KL to pursue their nursing education.
This collaboration between SEGi KL and USM is a significant milestone for Malaysian nursing education and a testament to the quality of education provided by SEGi KL. The collaboration of public and private universities will provide students with a more diverse learning environment, and the benchmark standard set by USM will ensure that education quality remains high.
