During the third year of the program, prior to completing the Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT), it’s compulsory for every student to pass the College Exit Exam. This exam is set according to the Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) requirements during the full accreditation process. On the 12th of August 2020, we conducted another round of college exit exams for the students from cohorts 20, 21 and 22.
This exam functions as the ‘exit’ pass towards the completion of the program. This exam consists of two parts : Part One has 100 multiple choice questions (MCQs) and Part Two is a practical hands-on session. The questions for both parts cover all the seven majors : Cytology, Histopathology, Biochemistry, Medical Microbiology, Medical Parasitology, Immunohematology and Hematology. Moreover, all the exam questions for both parts cover the application part of the theories learned.
During the college exit exam which was conducted on the 12th of August 2020, for the first time in history, the first part of the exam which was the 100 MCQs was conducted as an online exam using the Blackboard® platform. The lecturers had created question pools for all the seven majors using this platform. The students had to answer the 100 MCQs within 3 hours. Meanwhile, the practical session was conducted as a “wet test”, where the students’ hands-on skills were needed to complete the exam. It was evaluated by the lecturer through a checklist.
Ms. Chen Bee Chin, our industry advisor, is the Head of Biochemical Genetics from Hospital Kuala Lumpur. She commented that this exit exam is highly important in order to produce a quality graduate. She also mentioned that exit exams will make sure that the students can recall all hands-on skills that they have studied.
Ms. Chew Shi Ling, a 2016 graduate and a Dean’s List and High Achiever Award recipient, mentioned that this exam was important because it covered all the subjects taught and that this exam was like a ‘revision’ for the future students entering the work place. She is currently enrolled at University Malaya’s Bachelor of Science’s Biohealth program.
Through this college exit exam, the college can examine the basic level of education obtained by our DMLT students. Also, the college could make pertinent decisions in order to improve the quality of our DMLT curriculum standard according to COPPA 2.0.
