SEGi College Kota Damansara (SEGi) is making waves again as its Diploma in Culinary Arts students take centre stage in a remarkable culinary endeavour. Invited to participate in the prestigious Middle Zone Civic Carnival held in Kuala Selangor on February 24, 2024, the students showcased their culinary prowess by preparing an awe-inspiring 8-meter-long Yee Sang, intricately arranged in the form of dragons.
The Malaysian Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, inaugurated this grand spectacle commemorating the Year of the Dragon for the Chinese New Year 2024 Celebration. Led by SEGi Culinary Lecturers Mohd Faizal bin Md Saleh and Siti Solihah Ishak, the students crafted three magnificent Yee Sang dragons, utilising over 50 kg of vegetables, including white radish, carrot, cucumber, and salad.
What sets this Yee Sang apart is the innovative inclusion of rock melon, generously sponsored by MARDI. Kuala Selangor’s status as Malaysia’s main growing area for rock melon adds a unique local touch to the culinary masterpiece.
The event drew in more than 200 participants from diverse backgrounds, reflecting Malaysia’s rich cultural tapestry. Not only did the students gain invaluable hands-on experience, but they also had the opportunity to interact with distinguished guests and carnival visitors, enriching their learning beyond the classroom.
Head of SEGi’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (SOHTM), Bonnie Lopez, lauds such initiatives, emphasising their role in nurturing well-rounded individuals with diverse skills. Indeed, co-curricular activities like these align with SEGi’s commitment to holistic education, empowering students to excel in the dynamic F&B sector.
This remarkable feat not only showcases SCKD’s academic excellence but also underscores SEGi’s reputation as a leading institution dedicated to producing industry-ready graduates. As stated by the Malaysian Food and Beverage Executives Association (MFBEA), initiatives like these contribute to sectoral growth and individual empowerment.
SEGi College Kota Damansara continues to shine as a beacon of culinary innovation, leaving an indelible mark on Malaysia’s culinary landscape and beyond.
