SEGi: Putting fun into ESG Best Practices

Few endeavours can compare to the positivity generated by doing good work while having fun at the same time. And that entails saving our beloved planet, best executed through the 17 United Nations Sustainability Goals that SEGi has taken to heart.

Besides being one of the first tertiary education providers to use solar panels, SEGi has numerous Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) efforts to show for it, large or small.

Our pot-sized effort came in the form of a plant adoption drive on Father’s Day this year. In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 13, the event serves two goals, fighting climate change and creating awareness among the participants. While the potted babies have invariably found snug, light-filled homes and owners with green fingers, they will need to drink.

It was another win for water sustainability when SEGi University’s teams came up on top for the Pitch It Right! 2.0 competition organised by IChemE Student Chapter from Nottingham University (Malaysia). The winning idea was a real-time monitoring system using sensors, trackers, and control systems to monitor the quality of rainwater harvesting and recycling processes.

There were also happy moments in the forest. Our Eco-Engineering Hike Squad has been doing some legwork at the Kota Damansara Community Forest Reserve. A team of seven dedicated students collected the rubbish along the hiking trail, making the journey to the peak of Denai 3 Puteri a pleasant sight to the eyes.

But the top of the hill is not the only height SEGi has reached. Last year, SEGi hosted a global gathering of engineers and researchers on building a sustainable world.

The International Conference on Sustainable Engineering & Advanced Technology (ICSEAT 2022) gathered approximately 100 bright minds and talented researchers worldwide from the United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, China, Poland, Indonesia, Bulgaria, Vietnam, India and Malaysia.

These are but several of the many initiatives SEGi has done towards furthering its ESG commitment. It is a nod towards the bigger, better activities that are soon to come, underscoring SEGi’s unique DNA of bringing effective education to life, in or away from the classroom.
