While Covid-19 might have put a lot of activities on hold, Mr Yii Kah Hoe, the senior music lecturer of SEGi College Subang Jaya, still continues to produce inspiring achievements!
Like many academics who found themselves having to work from home, Mr Yii, an educationist at heart, moved to online teaching to ensure his diploma and degree students were fully supported as their studies continued uninterrupted. Beyond his academic responsibilities at the College, Mr Yii also took on overseas engagements including a Facebook Live Symposium on Chinese Music organised by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra Conductors (May 17), for Chinese Orchestra conductors and musicians to communicate and exchange ideas.
Mr Yii was also featured on 14 June in the Jesselton Philharmonic Orchestra Family Programme, which was a live broadcast via ZOOM and streamed on YouTube. The programme was part of the Movement Control Special Series to uplift the spirit of members and friends during the COVID 19 pandemic.
As a renowned composer, music composition continues, and Mr Yii’s “My Spirit is Chanting” for soprano, bass clarinet and percussion, has been included in the global digital album “Voices of the Pearl, Volume 3”, together with works by well-known composers Chinary Ung, Emillie Cecilia LeBel, and Karola Obermüller. This album, released on July 31, 2020, is eligible for the submission to the Recording Academy in consideration for the 63rd Annual GRAMMY Awards!
With more creative juices churning, Mr Yii even attempted new artistic territory – film music. The film, “The Story of Southern Islet”, which features Mr Yii’s music, has been submitted to several international film festivals, including the Busan International Film Festival for the consideration.
Creativity knows no bounds indeed! We are inspired and look forward in anticipation to more stunning feasts from Mr Yii Kah Hoe!
