SEGi offers training to affected Hospitality & Tourism workers

The COVID-19 pandemic caused nations including Malaysia to implement immigration ban and border blockade, what was before a promising year had today turned into a survival battle for some in the travel industry.

Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) CEO, Yap Lip Seng disclosed to The Edge that from January to June 2020, lodgings and hotels have lost RM3.3 billion from room income alone. Numerous lodgings and hotels in Kuala Lumpur are confronting partial shutdown as their occupancy rates have dropped to an enormous low. A few four and five-star lodgings in Kuala Lumpur saw an all-time low occupancy rate of 10 percent and worries that they may not survive until the situation improves. In the airlines industry, Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAS) was forced to put 13,000 workers on pay cuts.

Recognizing the need to contribute to the Hospitality and Tourism Industry, SEGi College Subang Jaya School of Hospitality and Tourism collaborated with IFPA Resources to develop a few training programmes to upskill and reskill affected Hospitality and Tourism workers. These short courses cover essential skills such as communication, team dynamics, design thinking, adaptation of technology, and Data Science.
