The Art of Cinematic Mastery: A Journey through Film Appreciation

Lights, camera, action! SEGi recently played host to a captivating Film Appreciation event, organised by the School of Communication and Creative Arts (SOCAD). With an aim to foster meaningful discussions and debates about the magic of cinema, the event was designed to encourage students to share their thoughts, insights, and interpretations while exploring the potential of films as powerful tools for addressing social issues and promoting dialogue.

The event brought together film enthusiasts and curious minds under one roof, ready to embark on a cinematic journey that would challenge their perceptions and ignite their creativity. The theme of the event, “Unraveling the Silver Screen,” focused on two acclaimed films, ‘Parasite’ and ‘3 Idiots,’ selected for their thought-provoking narratives and social relevance.

The day commenced with an enthusiastic audience gathering in the student affair office, eagerly anticipating the cinematic showcase. ‘Parasite,’ the South Korean masterpiece directed by Bong Joon Ho, kicked off the event. The film’s gripping storyline, exploring the complex issues of social class and inequality, immediately sparked intense discussions among the attendees. With its clever use of symbolism and masterful storytelling, ‘Parasite’ served as a catalyst for thought-provoking conversations.

Following the screening, participants were encouraged to engage in group discussions led by lecturers from SOCAD. These sessions encouraged students to share their impressions and delve deeper into the film’s messages, provoking insightful debates on societal disparities and human behavior.

After a short break filled with lively chatter, the event proceeded with the screening of ‘3 Idiots,’ a Bollywood gem directed by Rajkumar Hirani. This Indian coming-of-age comedy-drama film resonated with the audience through its exploration of the education system’s pressures and the importance of following one’s passion. Laughter, emotion, and inspiration were all in the air as students found themselves relating to the film’s central theme of pursuing dreams against all odds.

This Film Appreciation event was part of a series of initiatives organized by SOCAD to promote creative expression and media literacy among SEGi students. By providing a platform for students to engage with thought-provoking films, the college aims to encourage critical thinking, empathy, and open-mindedness—qualities essential for fostering well-rounded individuals ready to face the challenges of the future.

As the curtains closed on this successful event, SEGi looks forward to continuing its mission of inspiring and nurturing the creative minds of tomorrow, using the magical medium of cinema to pave the way for meaningful change in society.
