SEGi organised an event focusing on the role of entrepreneurship and economic growth in promoting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Held on 18 October 2023 at the Auditorium, the event titled “Celebrating the United Nation Days: Creating & Building Sustainable Development Goals” was organised by the Graduate School of Business (GSB).
The event featured a PEP TALK session aimed at encouraging students to support the United Nations (UN) in upholding the SDGs. Esteemed speakers Dr. Shanmugam Annamalah, an economist and senior lecturer at GSB, and Dr. Mukundar Kumar Nair, an entrepreneur and part-time lecturer, shared their valuable thoughts and experiences with the attendees.
The event highlighted the significance of businesses in contributing to the achievement of the SDGs through the adoption of sustainable practices. These practices include implementing environmentally friendly operations, promoting social inclusivity, and prioritising ethical supply chains. Furthermore, businesses can collaborate with governments, NGOs, and local communities to drive sustainable development initiatives and leverage innovative technologies to find new solutions.
The SDGs are a set of 17 goals adopted by world leaders in 2015 to guide global development efforts until 2030. These goals cover various areas including poverty eradication, health and well-being, quality education, clean energy, sustainable cities, and responsible consumption and production. Each goal has specific targets and indicators to measure progress towards their achievement.
The United Nations plays a crucial role in maintaining international peace and security while also addressing global challenges such as poverty, climate change, and inequality. Additionally, the UN promotes human rights, fosters social and economic development, and facilitates dialogue between nations.
During the PEP Talk session, students were urged to take responsibility and work towards achieving the SDGs. The importance of inclusivity was emphasized to ensure that progress reaches all individuals and communities, including SEGians. The interdependence of goals was also highlighted, recognising that addressing one goal can have positive impacts on others. As one of the speakers aptly stated, “It starts with us!”
Engaging with the SDGs not only contributes to global sustainability but also brings economic benefits to businesses. By aligning their strategies with sustainable practices, businesses can improve operational efficiency, enhance brand reputation, attract socially conscious consumers, and access new markets and investment opportunities. SDG engagement can lead to long-term profitability and competitiveness.
SEGi has integrated the SDGs into its syllabus for certain subjects within its business programs. By incorporating these activities, students are exposed to alternative teaching and learning experiences that provide a better understanding of the SDG vision.
