SEGi’s blood-drive hits the mark: a life-saving success

SEGi College Kuala Lumpur had a incredible successful blood-donation drive, an event held to raise awareness about blood donation, educate the public about its significance, and highlight the ongoing impact of regular donations on countless individuals and patients in need.

Faculty members, Mohamad Hidayat Mohammad Isa and Jayatheswary Parnealsivam, in collaboration with the local largest centralised blood bank, the Pusat Darah Negara (PDN), successfully set up a well-organised donation centre on campus.

Trained medical professionals were present throughout the day, ensuring a safe and comfortable donation process for each participant. The atmosphere buzzed with a sense of purpose and unity, as individuals from all walks of life united in their commitment to give the gift of life.

Volunteer donors received valuable information about blood types, including learning their own during a thorough eligibility examination and explanation of the donation process.

Beyond the act of donation itself, the event created a supportive and caring environment. Students and staff members volunteered their time and efforts to ensure the event ran smoothly. Their dedication and enthusiasm were instrumental in creating a positive and inclusive atmosphere, encouraging everyone to participate and contribute.

We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to all the donors, volunteers, organisers and supporters who made this event a resounding success. Their selflessness and commitment to serving others are a testament to the values we hold dear in our community.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), every two seconds, someone in the world needs blood. In Malaysia, the demand for blood is also significant. The National Blood Centre (Pusat Darah Negara) reported that an estimated 450,000 blood donors are needed annually to meet the country’s transfusion requirements. Unfortunately, the actual number of voluntary donors falls short of this target, making events like SEGi’s blood-donation drive even more vital in bridging this gap and saving lives.

The need for consistent donations is paramount as blood has a limited shelf life. For example, red blood cells can only be stored for up to 42 days. Platelets, which are crucial for cancer patients and those with blood disorders, have an even shorter shelf life of just five days. Hence, regular donations are essential to ensure a stable and sufficient blood supply to support medical treatments and emergency situations.

SEGi’s dedication to raising awareness about blood donation and educating the public about its significance aligns with the WHO’s call for voluntary, unpaid blood donors to provide safe and sufficient blood supplies. By collaborating with the National Blood Centre, SEGi played a vital role in reinforcing the importance of regular donations to meet the ongoing needs of countless individuals and patients in need of life-saving transfusions.
