Student nurses from SEGi College Kuala Lumpur recently conducted a free health-screening programme for its students in the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) and Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT).
This was a wonderful initiative taken by the Allied Health and Science Faculty’s lecturers to give future nurses the excellent opportunity to practise the skills learnt from the textbooks and raise awareness of the importance of health screening.
Many people are unaware that health screening is important for everyone, not just those who feel unwell. Screening tells people whether they have a higher chance of developing potential health problems, provides the information to make informed decisions on treatment available, and is necessary for the early detection and management of many potentially fatal diseases.
The student nurses’ involvement in health screening programmes as a part of the clinical practice is a great way for them to improve and learn to integrate theoretical principles with nursing practices, as well as an excellent way for them to experience the implementation of the nursing process in a community setting.
