SEGi College Kuala Lumpur celebrated Malaysia Day in a vibrant display of unity and cultural pride with its “Malaysian Fusion Fest,” organised by the Student Representative Council (SRC). Held on 18 September 2024, the event brought together students, faculty, and staff at the SCKL Main Building Lobby to embrace Malaysia’s rich diversity.
With an attendance of 120 participants, the celebration showcased SEGi’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 17: Partnerships for the Goals. The event was spearheaded by SRC President Jeevaloshene Ganesan and received enthusiastic participation, reflecting SEGi’s dedication to fostering inclusivity and community engagement.
The Malaysian Fusion Fest was a lively occasion filled with traditional performances, cultural displays, and interactive booths representing Malaysia’s varied ethnicities, languages, and customs. The event’s primary objective was to deepen students’ understanding of Malaysia’s multicultural heritage and to cultivate a sense of unity through shared appreciation of the nation’s rich traditions. This approach aligns with SDG No. 17, which seeks to build meaningful partnerships across communities and cultures for sustainable development.
According to studies, cultural diversity contributes positively to the social and economic fabric of a nation, enhancing creativity and innovation (source: UNESCO). SEGi’s focus on cultural education during the Malaysian Fusion Fest underscores the importance of these values. The event provided an experiential learning environment, where students engaged in diverse cultural activities, from traditional dances to language workshops. In a nation where over 137 languages are spoken (source: Wikipedia), events like these play a crucial role in promoting cultural literacy and respect among young people.
SEGi’s commitment to integrating the principles of the United Nations SDGs into its events and programmes is also evident in the collaborative spirit encouraged through the event’s planning and execution. Students were actively involved in organising, showcasing SEGi’s dedication to experiential learning and leadership development. This hands-on experience in event management and cultural presentation not only empowered students but also encouraged a deeper engagement with the university’s values of inclusivity and respect for diversity.
The event’s success is a testament to SEGi’s mission to nurture well-rounded graduates who appreciate cultural diversity and understand its significance in today’s globalised world. The event also complemented SDG No. 4: Quality Education, as it fostered a setting for informal learning, enriching the students’ understanding of Malaysia’s multi-ethnic makeup.
Through initiatives like the Malaysian Fusion Fest, SEGi strengthens its role as an educational institution committed to building inclusive and supportive communities. By actively promoting SDGs No. 17 and No. 4, SEGi not only enhances students’ academic growth but also equips them with the cultural awareness and interpersonal skills necessary to become global citizens.
This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
SDG 4: Quality Education
SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
