Empowering Future Nurses Through Real-World Experiences at SAMH

SEGi College Kuala Lumpur’s nursing students recently participated in a transformative visit to the Selangor and Federal Territory Association for the Mentally Handicapped (SAMH), deepening their understanding of mental health support and community care. Led by Clinical Instructor Normaizatul Juanita Binti Mustapha, the visit brought together 22 nursing students eager to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios.

Taking place on 18 October 2024, the visit began with a warm welcome from SAMH representatives, who shared insights into the organisation’s impactful initiatives. Students explored SAMH’s specialised facilities and observed how tailored educational programmes, recreational activities, and compassionate care promote growth, confidence, and independence for individuals with special needs.

Key observations included:

  • Educational programmes that support emotional and psychological well-being.
  • Recreational activities designed to boost self-esteem and foster independence.
  • The pivotal role of quality care in improving lives across various age groups.

The visit also highlighted SAMH’s dedication to innovation in mental health care, aligning closely with SEGi College Kuala Lumpur’s emphasis on preparing students for real-world healthcare demands.

This visit reflects SEGi’s commitment to bridging theoretical learning with experiential training, an essential aspect of its nursing programme. Students gained hands-on exposure to the challenges and rewards of mental health support, enriching their understanding of empathetic patient care.

As Malaysia faces a growing demand for healthcare professionals—projected to rise by 15% in the coming years—immersive experiences like this equip SEGi nursing students with the skills and confidence to excel in their careers.

To reinforce their learning, students engaged in reflective journaling, allowing them to process their observations and deepen their understanding of patient-centred care.

SEGi College Kuala Lumpur’s dedication to transformative education aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG 4: Quality Education
  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being
