Future Nurses Gain Frontline Insights into Cancer Care at MAKNA

On 11 October 2024, students from the School of Nursing at SEGi College Kuala Lumpur embarked on an educational visit to Majlis Kanser Nasional (MAKNA) in Gombak. This insightful trip, organised by Clinical Instructor Nor Syuhada Mohamad Yusof, aimed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of cancer care and the multifaceted services offered by MAKNA.

The day began with an informative presentation by Staff Nurse Wani, who introduced the students to MAKNA’s mission and various initiatives through a detailed slideshow. This session highlighted the organisation’s dedication to fighting cancer by pooling resources and expertise from all sectors of society to reduce the pain and suffering associated with the disease.

Following the presentation, students were led on a house tour of Villa Arah and other MAKNA facilities by KJ Nana and KJ Dahlia. This immersive experience allowed students to witness firsthand the practical support services provided to cancer patients and their families, including accommodation, counseling, and rehabilitation programmes.

This educational visit served three key objectives:

  1. Enhance Understanding of Cancer Issues: Students gained valuable insights into the challenges faced by cancer patients and the comprehensive approach required to address these issues. MAKNA’s efforts in curative, preventive, research, and support services were emphasised, showcasing the importance of a multi-pronged strategy in fighting cancer.
  2. Cultivate Empathy and Compassion: By interacting with MAKNA staff and observing the facilities, students developed a deeper understanding of the emotional and physical toll cancer takes on individuals and their families. This experience fostered empathy and compassion, essential qualities for future healthcare professionals.
  3. Mobilise Resources for Cancer Support: The visit highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts in providing comprehensive cancer care. Students were encouraged to recognise their potential role in mobilising resources and advocating for improved support services for cancer patients and their families.

By collaborating with organisations like MAKNA, SEGi College is fostering future healthcare professionals who are not only knowledgeable but also compassionate and dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by cancer.

This initiative by SEGi College Kuala Lumpur aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically:
– SDG 4: Quality Education
– SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being
– SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
