Nursing Students Learn Compassionate Care Firsthand

SEGi College Kuala Lumpur’s nursing students took a significant step beyond the classroom, experiencing firsthand the real-world demands of healthcare through a visit to the Selangor and Federal Territory Association for the Mentally Handicapped (SAMH) on 18 October. Twenty-two nursing students, led by Clinical Instructor Normaizatul Juanita Binti Mustapha, engaged in an immersive experience that emphasised both the challenges and fulfilment of working in mental health support and community care.

The visit began with a warm reception by SAMH representatives, where students learned about SAMH’s impactful initiatives and the role of SEGi College Kuala Lumpur’s School of Nursing in advancing high-quality healthcare education. In alignment with SDG 4 for Quality Education and SDG 3 for Good Health and Well-being, this experience highlights SEGi’s dedication to preparing students through meaningful, hands-on learning.

Throughout the visit, students from years 1 to 3 explored SAMH’s specialised facilities, observing innovative and compassionate approaches to supporting emotional, psychological, and social well-being for individuals with special needs. They saw the profound effects of tailored educational programmes and the empowering impact of recreational activities that boost self-esteem and independence. As they toured SAMH, students gained insight into how quality care and support can help foster growth, confidence, and independence for individuals across different age groups.

The experience also emphasised SEGi’s commitment to bridging theoretical learning with practical exposure, helping students translate their skills to real-life scenarios. SEGi’s nursing programme has consistently focused on experiential learning, which is invaluable in a sector where empathetic care and hands-on training are vital. In Malaysia, the demand for skilled healthcare professionals is rising, with the nursing profession expected to grow by 15% in the coming years, making such immersive experiences a significant contributor to their education.

Following the visit, students were encouraged to participate in reflective journaling to help them process their observations and reinforce their understanding of patient care. SEGi continues to empower students with the skills, insight, and confidence they need to excel in their roles as future healthcare providers, staying aligned with its mission to deliver transformative education.
