LGBT is an initialism that stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender. This sexual orientation disorder which was previously faced by Western society, are now faced in our society. We might know what LGBT is but, how about the challenges faced by this community. Are we aware of that?
An intellectual online discourse which entitled, “The Challenges Faced by The LGBT Forum” was held to share the facts and info about the LGBT issues that currently happen in Malaysia. Early on, the moderator had reminded that the talk is based on empirical facts and issues related to the LGBT community, hence it’s not to be viewed as supporting or against the minor community.
The forum was moderated by Prof Azrin Ariffin, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and the guest speakers who joined in this forum were Dr Yusof Bin Dawood Gany (Psychology Lecturer), Mr Syed Azmi Alhabshi (Social Activist) and Mr Raymond Tai, an acting COO from PT Foundation.
It was a fruitful and refreshing talk as the speakers had touched on various issues that surround the community. Based on the research done, the LGBT sexual orientation was not genetically inherited, but it has been developed due to social factors which affect their sexual orientation. The challenges faced by this community including discrimination and stigma among the society as this affected a minority group and been frowned upon in the social-cultural context. As a result, the LGBT individuals are very much prone to suffer from mental health issue.
