SEGi College Subang Jaya Co-Curriculum Management students recently completed a successful beach cleaning event, “Sea You, Sea Me,” on 18 March 2023 at Pantai Kelanang, Banting. The event, organised by the School of MPU, aimed to raise awareness about the importance of reducing single-use plastics, littering, and waste. The students worked with My Clean Beach, a programme started to clean up Malaysian beaches, to supply beach cleaning equipment.
The purpose of the event was to emphasise the importance of preserving the environment and underwater wildlife, as well as to educate the public about recycling and how it benefits our ecosystem. The event was in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14, which calls for the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans, seas, and marine resources for long-term development.
At 7:50 a.m., the students began the volunteer activity with a briefing and task distribution from the leader, and the clean-up began. The students were divided into groups and asked to sort the trash into four categories: plastic, metal, paper, and miscellaneous. My Clean Beach, the sponsor, joined the students in the clean-up activity, and the students were grateful for the sponsor’s experience and knowledge in identifying and properly handling trash.
Following the completion of the activity, the students checked all the items received from the Majlis Perbandaran Kuala Langat (MPKL) and ensured that they were returned to MPKL. After finishing the clean-up activity, the students took a break and enjoyed the scenery of the beach.
Beach clean-ups are critical to saving the environment and benefiting marine life and humans. According to the United Nations, land-based activities such as littering and waste disposal account for 80% of marine pollution. Plastic makes up 80% of beach litter in Malaysia, endangering marine life and disrupting the ocean ecosystem.
The “Sea You, Sea Me” beach cleaning event organised by SEGi College Subang Jaya Co-Curricular Management students was a success. The event raised awareness about the importance of reducing single-use plastics, littering, and waste, as well as the importance of preserving the environment and underwater wildlife. It also educated the public about recycling and how it benefits our ecosystem. Such events promote environmental responsibility and care while also supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
