Studying music at SEGi College Subang Jaya can lead to a range of fulfilling careers, including one in higher education. One of our music graduates who chose an academic career is Dr Chin Hong Da, currently Assistant Professor in Music Composition, Western Illinois University, USA.
For Dr Chin, his student life at SEGi College Subang Jaya was formative to his music career. At the college, he was introduced to a strong academic learning environment where he learned not only the fundamentals of music but also the diverse cultures Malaysia offered through the courses carefully designed by the SEGi lecturers. For Dr Chin, who started off as a Chinese flutist, this exposure to traditional Malaysian music instilled the importance of diversity in his creative output. Aesthetically and philosophically, this abundant cultural background has asserted unique qualities into his music and world view which are valued by the US academia and community.
Academically, the credits earned from the fundamental music classes he took at SEGi were transferrable to the universities in the US, where he continued his undergraduate and postgraduate studies. This speaks of the strength of our courses that are recognized internationally, offering flexibility for SEGi graduates to pursue further studies in other countries. For Dr Chin, his admission into the universities for his student career in the US was undeniably indebted to what he learned in his formative years in SEGi.
Dr Chin also attributes the success of his employment at the Western Illinois University to the versatility and diversity in his portfolio that made him stand out among the huge pool of applicants.
Dr. Chin’s music has been performed in the US, Germany, France, Hungary, Czech Republic, Romania, Austria, Poland, Israel, Malaysia, Japan, the Philippines and Singapore. As a flutist, he has won several competitions and has performed at venues and festivals including Carnegie Hall (NYC), the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Washington D.C.), and the Silesian Theatre (Katowice, Poland).
