As part of SEGi’s consistent effort to bring industry into the classroom, SEGi Group of Colleges recently organised a guest lecture by the Prestige Hotel Penang on their standard of procedures (SOPs) in their Housekeeping Department. The expert was Mr Achmad, the Housekeeping Manager.
Open since October 2019, the Prestige Hotel is a five-star luxury hotel situated in the heart of George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Penang. The 162-room property has been brought to life by the Ministry of Design, whose scheme forms a modern-day interpretation of Victorian design layered with local botany.
Mr Achmad explained that the Housekeeping Department’s SOPs is a step-by-step set of instructions on how to complete each housekeeping task. These processes have been approved by Management, and all housekeepers are expected to follow them to ensure consistency, accuracy, and quality. He also spoke on the importance of Housekeeping SOPs, being that they ensure:
- the performance and accountability of the Housekeeping Department
- quality control and consistency in the Housekeeping Department
- The safety of the Housekeeping Department staff
- The correct standard operating procedure for training new staff
Bringing in industry expertise to prepare students for what to expect when they are in the industry, and giving them first-hand knowledge from the industry experts is SEGi’s commitment to quality education.
This session was attended by both the Certificate in Hotel Operations and Diploma Hotel Management students taking the Room Division 2 and Housekeeping Management subjects. The students also enjoyed practical tasks such as making beds, supervised by Mr Achmad.
