SEGi College Subang Jaya recently hosted a vibrant Hotel Rush event on 21 November 2024, engaging 36 students and faculty members in a hands-on exploration of the hospitality industry. This unique programme aimed to nurture teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills, reflecting the real-world dynamics of the hospitality sector. The event, supported by Carabao, included activities such as Word Search, Mystery Menu, Spice Rack Rumble, and Whisk War. The participation fee of RM10 per team contributed to a total budget of RM500, supplemented by contributions from event planners and sponsors.
Despite challenges, such as last-minute cancellations by external participants and slight delays in starting, the event proceeded smoothly, showcasing remarkable resilience and adaptability from organisers and participants. Teams enjoyed activities like whisking egg whites to perfection, table setting, and even a daring Mystery Menu with hidden worms. Feedback highlighted the excitement and educational value of these challenges, with participants from diverse programmes, including Psychology and Hospitality, gaining insights into the industry.
The event also leveraged social media, generating over 3,251 views and 104 likes on Instagram, amplifying its impact and outreach. Prizes were awarded to the top three teams, along with lucky draw gifts for 15 participants, fostering an atmosphere of celebration and camaraderie. Lecturers and organisers were commended for their dedication, ensuring every detail was addressed, from decorations to activity management.
Hotel Rush aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). By blending education with interactive experiences, the event empowered students with practical skills, encouraged teamwork, and highlighted the importance of sustainable practices within the hospitality industry.
The successful execution of this event underscores SEGi’s commitment to experiential learning and holistic development. Organisers shared valuable lessons, emphasising the importance of communication, mutual support, and adaptability in creating impactful programmes. Participants left inspired, with many expressing newfound interest in hospitality, reflecting the event’s broader impact on fostering informed, skilled, and empowered individuals ready to contribute to sustainable growth.
