The Hospitality and Tourism Society (HATS) under the School of Hospitality & Tourism Management at SEGi College Subang Jaya recently organised an enriching two-day trip to Sekinchan, fostering camaraderie among students from various programmes.
Twenty-five students from the Certificate in Hotel Operation, Diploma in Hotel Management, and Bachelor in Tourism and Hospitality Management programmes participated in the excursion. They were accompanied by lecturers Ms. Anisha bt Ramli, Ms. Nik Azreeta Aziz, and Ms. Nathalie Joan Jules.
The trip, which took place on 20 – 21 May 2024, centred around two key locations: Taman Agroteknologi MARDI Tanjong Karang and Triangle Farm Cottage House Sekinchan.
Day one kicked off with exciting activities at MARDI, including boat races, paddy planting challenges, fishing, and catfish searching. The afternoon saw students engaging in team-building games at Triangle Farm Cottage House, culminating in a BBQ dinner and group performances. A special highlight was an appreciation celebration for final-year students.
The second day offered leisure activities such as swimming, badminton, and table tennis before departure.
This annual event aims to create bonds between students across different academic levels. “Before this, most SOHTM SJ students didn’t know each other well. Through the HATS club activities, they’ve grown closer and created unforgettable memories”, shared one of the organisers.
Students gained unique experiences, particularly in paddy cultivation and catfish catching. Many expressed enthusiasm about their new-found knowledge of agricultural practices at MARDI.
The trip also strengthened student-lecturer relationships, with participants expressing a desire to create more such memories at SEGi College Subang Jaya.
This successful outing demonstrates the importance of experiential learning and team-building in hospitality education, preparing students for the collaborative nature of their future industry.
