SEGi College Subang Jaya recently hosted “Our Earth, Our Responsibility,” an impactful event promoting environmental consciousness and sustainable practices among students. Held on 22nd March 2024 at the Student Lounge’s Vertical Garden, this initiative, organised by the MPU Department as part of the Co-curriculum and Sustainability Thinking Class (MPU3432), engaged students in meaningful discussions and activities focused on climate action and responsible waste management.
The event featured a compelling talk by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Santha Cenayah from Universiti Malaya, who highlighted the importance of waste reduction, recycling, and the role of individuals in mitigating climate change. Dr. Cenayah’s insights underscored the urgent need for sustainable practices, stressing that small changes in our daily lives can contribute significantly to a healthier planet. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, approximately 11 million tonnes of plastic waste enter the oceans every year, impacting marine life and ecosystems—a stark reminder of the urgency of waste reduction efforts.
In a move to foster hands-on learning, the event included a competition where students created handmade products using recycled materials. This interactive activity encouraged participants to think creatively about recycling while developing problem-solving and teamwork skills. Such practical applications resonate with a generation increasingly committed to sustainable practices, equipping students with the mindset needed to be proactive environmental stewards.
“Our Earth, Our Responsibility” proved to be an inspiring and educational experience for SEGi’s student community, reinforcing the importance of individual contributions toward global climate goals. With recent studies showing that 66% of young people globally are concerned about the future of the planet (source: UNDP), events like these are essential in empowering students to take action. By nurturing sustainability-focused skills and raising awareness about environmental responsibility, SEGi continues to foster a culture of sustainability within its educational programmes.
This initiative aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically:
- SDG 4: Quality Education
- SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
- SDG 13: Climate Action
