SEGi College Subang Jaya’s Co-curriculum and Sustainability Thinking Class (MPU3432) hosted a heartwarmingly successful pet adoption drive, “Mercury’s Adoption Drive”, on 4 August. Held at Damen Mall in USJ 1, the event aimed to encourage the community to embrace pet adoption rather than buying from breeders, contributing to a more compassionate and sustainable society.
Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 11, which focuses on sustainable cities and communities, the drive highlighted the importance of animal welfare. By promoting adoption, the event sought to raise awareness about the plight of abandoned animals and offer a pathway to finding them loving homes.
The event saw a fantastic collaboration with Sayang Sayang Cat Shelter, with shelter owner Kak Sue Mayang conducting interviews with potential adopters. Thanks to her dedication and the compassion of attendees, two lucky cats found their forever homes on the day!
The organisers of Mercury’s Adoption Drive were overjoyed with the event’s success. Witnessing the two cats find loving homes was incredibly rewarding and served as a powerful reminder of the importance of such initiatives. The experience has further solidified their commitment to raising awareness about pet adoption and responsible pet ownership within the community. They believe that by continuing to organise similar events and promote these values, they can contribute to a more compassionate and sustainable society where every animal has a chance to find a loving home.
Studies show that pet adoption can have a significant impact on reducing stray animal populations and promoting responsible pet ownership. According to the World Animal Protection Organisation, there are an estimated 1.6 million stray animals in Malaysia, with thousands ending up in shelters each year due to abandonment or neglect. By choosing adoption over purchasing pets from breeders, communities can help alleviate overcrowded shelters and reduce the environmental impact associated with commercial breeding practices, which contribute to waste and resource consumption.
The Mercury’s Adoption Drive demonstrated the power of student-led initiatives in driving positive change. By partnering with local shelters and engaging the community, the event successfully promoted animal welfare and contributed to a more sustainable future. The organisers are already planning future events to further champion the cause of pet adoption and inspire more people to open their hearts and homes to animals in need.
This initiative by SEGi College Subang Jaya aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically:
- SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
- SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
- SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
