SEGi College Subang Jaya proudly held our 20th Convocation (#SEGiConvo22) on 21 May 2022 at SEGi University Kota Damansara, when a whopping 1,368 students across forty programmes from our four partner-institutions – SEGi College Subang Jaya, the University of Greenwich (UK), the University of Sunderland (UK), and Troy University (USA) – received their scrolls.
This was an amazing milestone for SEGi because for the first time ever, we successfully had to hold two convocations in a single day because of the overwhelming number of graduates, including several international students who travelled from their countries with their families to attend.
First-class honours are no small deal in the academic world. This year we are thrilled to credit a total of eighty-eight first-class-honours bachelor’s-degree graduates, forty-nine of whom were from the Faculty of Engineering and IT. Beaming with obvious pride and joy, the Acting Deputy Head of the Faculty of Engineering and IT, Mr Prakas Gopal Samy, said, “Engineering and IT programmes are among the most rigorous academic programmes to go through. Yet, our faculty has produced the most first-class honours for the graduating class of 2022. The pandemic changed the landscape of education, making physical face-to-face tutorials virtually impossible over the last two years. However, the academicians of our FOEIT went above and beyond in providing the additional support needed for our students to excel. We remained focused and certain we could do whatever it would take to support our students, and the results for this graduating batch is a testament to the commitment of our lecturers and our students.”
Valedictorians are the celebrated best of their year, chosen always for both their exemplary academic and extracurricular performance. The valedictorian this year was Ms Tan Yuen Joo from the BA (Hons) Early-Years Education programme awarded by the University of Greenwich, UK. She was chosen from the pool of outstanding bachelor’s degree students from the University of Greenwich, the University of Sunderland, and Troy University. The College Academic Board had a tough time making their decision from this stellar list, but after careful deliberation, decided on Yuen Joo based on her confidence, participation in extracurricular activities, and especially excellence in her academics. Yuen Joo took part in the STEM competition and won three medals – the gold for her instructional video on STEM experiment for little scientists, the silver for her poster on raising STEM awareness, and the bronze for her COVID-19 invention. Yuen Joo also participated positively in the programme committee meeting as a representative of the Bachelor of Early Years Education programme.
Professor Jane Roscoe, Deputy Vice Chancellor, University of Greenwich, said, “The University of Greenwich and SEGi shares a long partnership and it is strengthened year by year because our goals are aligned – and that is to provide not only an academically excellent programme, but also to train and prepare our students to take what they’ve learnt and put it into practice. The valedictorian this year, Tan, from UoG programme embodies exactly that – a student who is strong academically, posses strong interpersonal skills, as well as excels in extra curriculars such as competitions. We are extremely proud of Yuen Joo and all our other graduates of UOG based in the Malaysian SEGi campus.”
SEGi also gives the Outstanding Student Award to the student with the best academic performance of SEGi College Subang Jaya’s homegrown programmes (Certificate, Foundation and Diploma Programmes), and this year, it goes to Ms Preathvee A/P Sohan from the Diploma in Psychology, Faculty of Music, Education and Psychology, because she scored an outstanding CGPA of 3.97. Said Ms Yeoh Sun Wei, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Music, Education and Psychology, “Preathvee embodies excellence not only in her studies, but outside of them. She is the Regional Marketing Manager of Httpool, one of the largest global partners of major media platforms. We are extremely proud of her achievement. Her story resembles many SEGians’ – and this is the story where if you’re willing to work hard, nothing is impossible.”
This convocation was the first major physical event for the college since before the COVID-19 pandemic. It has not been easy for any of us during that difficult time, but we are so very grateful that as a purveyor of quality education and as a nation, we have come out shining against all odds, because of our amazing lecturers and students. We are extremely grateful to all our partner universities and their representatives who took the time, trouble and expense to fly in from across the world to join us in celebrating our students’ very commendable and wonderful achievements.
