SEGi University & Colleges has welcomed a group of students from FTMS College, which had recently closed down. The sudden closure of the college meant many of its students were left campus-less to complete their studies, particularly those in their final year.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is most unfortunate to hear the troubling situation of the FTMS students, and we are happy to have them at our campus,\u201d said Stella Lau, Managing Director of SEGi University & Colleges.<\/p>\n
Lau said SEGi had worked closely with the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) throughout the affected students\u2019 credit transferring process. She then elaborated that the FTMS students are now enrolled in its Diploma of Psychology at SEGi College Subang, as well as Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Diploma in Hotel Management at SEGi College Kota Damansara. These students began their classes on 29 August and 3 September, respectively.<\/p>\n
In recent years, many private higher education institutions (PHEIs) have faced many challenges in keeping their doors open. \u201cEducation is a highly competitive industry. All PHEIs should have a solid and sustainable business model, with achievable short- and long-term goals,\u201d commented Lau. \u201cLack of quality accredited programmes or offering discounted fees for mediocre courses would only lead to poor student enrolment. As a result, a low-performing PHEI will have to close down or become dormant,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
Lau also highlighted a reduction in student enrolment from 20% – 50% since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and recent statistics indicating 72.1% of students are uninterested in continuing their studies beyond secondary school.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe must not only prioritise academic excellence and research, but also pay attention to widening access and participation to learning opportunities, and providing holistic education experience to promote lifelong learning,\u201d she elaborated.<\/p>\n
On another note, SPM graduates should also do their homework before deciding on a higher education institution. \u201cLook out for colleges or universities with a strong track record, and avoid too-good-to-be-true offers. An investment in knowledge pays the best interest, so don\u2019t go cheap on your education,\u201d Lau advised.<\/p>\n
