Sustainability is often taught in theory, but its real impact is best understood when experienced first-hand, where science, environment, and community intersect in practical ways.<\/p>\n

Students from the Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology programme at SEGi College Sarawak<\/span><\/span> gained this perspective during a visit to Borneo Empurau Farm and Resort<\/span><\/span>, a destination that blends sustainable practices with education and leisure. The experience offered a closer look at how environmental responsibility and resource management are applied in real settings.<\/p>\n

Held on 26 November 2025, the visit was part of a faculty activity designed to broaden students\u2019 understanding beyond laboratory learning. It introduced them to how sustainability initiatives can support both ecological balance and community development.<\/p>\n

One of the key highlights was the Empurau fish hatchery, where students explored the breeding process of one of the region\u2019s most prized freshwater species. The session emphasised the importance of responsible aquaculture and how sustainable practices help protect biodiversity while supporting local livelihoods.<\/p>\n

The farm also demonstrated modern agricultural approaches through its fertigation and aquaponics systems. These methods showcased how efficient water usage and controlled farming techniques can improve crop yields while minimising environmental impact. Such exposure allowed students to see how science is applied in innovative and sustainable ways outside traditional laboratory environments.<\/p>\n

Beyond agriculture, students explored the animal park and aviary, observing a variety of domestic and exotic species. This experience deepened their appreciation for biodiversity and the importance of conservation in maintaining ecological balance.<\/p>\n

The visit concluded with a recreational session at the water theme park, offering students a chance to unwind and strengthen social connections. This balance of learning and leisure played an important role in supporting their overall well-being, particularly as they approached their final examinations.<\/p>\n

More than just a day trip, the experience reinforced key learning outcomes. Students developed a broader understanding of sustainability, recognised the role of science in environmental stewardship, and gained appreciation for how industries can operate responsibly while benefiting communities.<\/p>\n

Through initiatives like this, SEGi College Sarawak continues to provide meaningful, real-world learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom and prepare students to think critically about sustainability and their role in shaping a better future.<\/p>\n
