Students from the Diploma in Mass Communication programme<\/strong>\u00a0recently gained valuable industry exposure through a courtesy visit to Tribune Press Sdn Bhd<\/strong>, publisher of Sarawak Tribune<\/em>, located at Metrocity Kuching.<\/p>\n

Organised as part of the Industry into Classroom experiential learning initiative<\/strong>, the visit provided students with first-hand insight into how modern journalism is evolving from traditional print media to digital platforms.<\/p>\n

A small group of three students participated in the session, accompanied by lecturer Mr Kevin Keegan Anak Jerome<\/strong>. The intentionally small group allowed for more focused interaction, enabling deeper conversations and a more personalised learning experience with industry professionals.<\/p>\n

Students were warmly received by Editor in Chief Mr Aden Nagrace<\/strong> and Chief Reporter (Digital) Miss Sarah Hafizah Chandra<\/strong>, who shared detailed perspectives on the daily operations of a media organisation. The session introduced students to editorial workflows, content planning, and the responsibilities involved in producing accurate and timely news.<\/p>\n

A key focus of the visit was the transformation of journalism in the digital era. Students learned how traditional print newspapers are adapting to digital media<\/strong>, including the rise of e newspapers, online news portals, and social media driven content distribution. This shift highlighted the importance of speed, accessibility, and audience engagement in today\u2019s media landscape.<\/p>\n

The discussion also explored the growing role of Artificial Intelligence in journalism<\/strong>, particularly in areas such as research, fact checking, data gathering, and real time information access. These insights helped students understand how technology is reshaping the way news is produced, verified, and delivered.<\/p>\n

In addition, the visit opened up opportunities for industrial training placements<\/strong>. Sarawak Tribune expressed interest in accepting interns from SEGi College Sarawak, with future collaborations to be formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding between both institutions. This presents valuable opportunities for students to gain hands on experience and apply their skills in a professional media environment.<\/p>\n

Through this engagement, students were able to connect classroom learning with real industry practices, gaining a deeper understanding of journalism, media ethics, and the demands of working in a rapidly evolving media industry.<\/p>\n

The School of Communication views this visit as an important step in strengthening collaboration between academia and the media industry, while preparing students to become adaptable, informed, and future ready media professionals.<\/p>\n
