Diploma in Mass Communication students recently had the opportunity to learn directly from the media industry through a special masterclass session delivered by renowned Sarawak media practitioner Ms Rossalynn Ismail<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The session was organised as part of the faculty\u2019s Industry into Classroom initiative, bringing real-world industry perspectives into the academic environment. Around eight students participated in the masterclass, which was conducted to provide practical insights into the realities of journalism in the modern digital media landscape.<\/p>\n

With a professional journey that began in journalism at the New Straits Times<\/strong>, Ms Rossalynn brings more than 25 years of experience across journalism, media education, and strategic communication. Her extensive career includes lecturing roles in communication and media studies at institutions such as Limkokwing University of Creative Technology and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Melaka, alongside active involvement in media training, editorial work, and industry discussions on journalism ethics and media practices.<\/p>\n

During the masterclass, students explored the evolving landscape of digital journalism, including issues such as algorithm driven news distribution, user generated content as journalistic sources, and the growing challenges of misinformation, deepfakes, and AI generated content. Ms Rossalynn also emphasised the continued importance of core journalistic values such as truth, independence, fairness, accountability, and minimising harm, principles widely upheld by global organisations including the Society of Professional Journalists and the International Federation of Journalists.<\/p>\n

Beyond theoretical discussion, the session encouraged students to reflect on the responsibilities of journalists in maintaining credibility and ethical standards in an increasingly complex digital media environment. The discussion also highlighted the importance of multimedia storytelling, including video, podcasts, and interactive media formats that shape modern news production.<\/p>\n

In addition to her work in journalism and academia, Ms Rossalynn has also contributed to creative media projects as a scriptwriter and media relations contributor for award winning short films recognised at the Asian International Film Festival & Awards (AIFFA) and Angkatan Azam Mansang (AZAM) Short Film Competitions.<\/p>\n

Through initiatives such as this masterclass, SEGi College Sarawak continues to bridge academic learning with real industry practices, ensuring students gain valuable exposure to professional insights that strengthen their readiness for careers in journalism, media, and communication.<\/p>\n

The School of Communication hopes this engagement will further strengthen collaboration with media practitioners and industry partners, creating more opportunities for experiential learning, internships, and professional development for students in the future.<\/p>\n
