Cybersecurity is no longer just a buzzword; it is a global priority. On 1 August 2025, IT students gathered at the Theatrette, SEGi College Sarawak (Main Campus) for a dynamic engagement session with SAINS Sdn Bhd, gaining direct insights into one of the fastest-growing fields of the digital age. The two-hour session not only introduced students to the scope of SAINS\u2019 cybersecurity services but also connected academic learning with the realities of industry practice.<\/p>\n

The interactive talk gave students a chance to understand how professionals tackle real-world IT threats and why the demand for cybersecurity talent is rising rapidly. According to Cybersecurity Ventures, the global cost of cybercrime is expected to hit USD 10.5 trillion annually by 2025, while closer to home, Malaysia recorded over 20,000 cybercrime cases in 2023 alone with losses amounting to RM1.34 billion. By engaging with SAINS experts, students were exposed to the mindset, skills, and resilience required to step into critical roles such as threat intelligence, incident response, and penetration testing.<\/p>\n

Throughout the session, quizzes and interactive activities kept energy high, with small prizes rewarding those who demonstrated sharp understanding. Practical topics like phishing and the emerging threat of \u201cquishing\u201d \u2014 a form of cyberattack using QR codes \u2014 gave students knowledge they could immediately apply to protect themselves and others. Such lessons are essential as Statista reports that phishing remains the most common cyber threat globally, accounting for nearly 40% of all data breaches in 2024.<\/p>\n

The programme also underscored career readiness, with SAINS presenting pathways to internships and discussing joint project opportunities with SEGi College Sarawak. These touchpoints illustrate the institution\u2019s commitment to giving students an edge in employability by connecting them to industry players who shape the nation\u2019s digital infrastructure.<\/p>\n

This collaboration reflects SEGi\u2019s wider goal of empowering graduates with future-ready skills while addressing national and global imperatives. Cybersecurity underpins not just IT, but healthcare, finance, and national security, making such industry linkages vital to creating talent capable of safeguarding society\u2019s digital future. By bridging classroom knowledge with real-world expertise, the session embodied SEGi\u2019s role as a driver of innovation, opportunity, and sustainable development.<\/p>\n
