On 2 July 2025, students from SEGi\u2019s Diploma in Early Childhood Education and A-Level Law programmes were given an eye-opening opportunity to witness the Malaysian legal system in action during a study visit to the High Court of Kuching, Petra Jaya. Conducted under the Industry into Classroom initiative, the experience brought legal concepts, child protection issues, and ethical practices to life in a setting far beyond textbooks and lectures.<\/p>\n

Guided by lecturers Flora Santi Tahil and Sathiswaran A\/L Sathiasegaran, the group of 16 students engaged in a dynamic itinerary that included observing an active court trial, touring the Prison Court, and exploring the Court\u2019s Mini Museum and Library. A police officer provided additional insights into courtroom protocol, helping students understand not just legal structures, but also the human impact of judicial decisions.<\/p>\n

For early childhood education students, the visit highlighted how the justice system serves as a backbone for upholding children\u2019s rights and welfare. Observing custody and protection cases allowed them to see first-hand the legal mechanisms in place to shield vulnerable minors. The experience reinforced essential values in the field of education\u2014confidentiality, ethical reporting, and the educator\u2019s role as an advocate for every child.<\/p>\n

Law students, meanwhile, gained critical exposure to real court proceedings and professional legal conduct, enriching their theoretical learning with live observation of courtroom dialogue and decorum. According to the World Justice Project, Malaysia ranks 50th globally for rule of law, making initiatives like this vital for cultivating legal literacy and reinforcing trust in institutional justice.<\/p>\n

By uniting SEGi College Sarawak’s students from diverse academic paths in a shared environment, the visit created meaningful discussion on how law and education intersect in protecting society\u2019s most vulnerable. Such cross-disciplinary engagement is essential in preparing future professionals to act with responsibility, empathy, and purpose.<\/p>\n
