SEGi\u2019s Diploma in Psychology Year 1 students recently turned empathy into action through a two-week Fundraising Booth in support of Hope Place, a local NGO dedicated to helping underprivileged communities in Kuching. Held from 10 to 24 March 2025 at the college\u2019s Social Sphere, the initiative saw students\u2014guided by two lecturers\u2014raise funds and awareness for families in need, reinforcing the power of collective student-led change.<\/p>\n

Driven by a deep sense of social responsibility, the students curated creative, hands-on activities including second-hand clothing sales, handmade crafts, and educational exhibits showcasing Hope Place\u2019s mission. The launch event energised the campus, transforming the space into a hub of compassion and collaboration. The booth not only raised funds but ignited meaningful conversations about community care, equity, and the ongoing reality of poverty in Malaysia.<\/p>\n

According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, the absolute poverty rate rose to 6.2% in 2022, affecting hundreds of thousands of families. Initiatives like this empower students to move beyond textbooks and engage with the human side of psychology\u2014developing emotional intelligence, leadership, and advocacy skills essential for their future roles in mental health and community service.<\/p>\n

This effort also demonstrates how education can inspire action. For psychology students in particular, this experience offered a practical lens into behavioural science, compassion-driven communication, and the impact of grassroots efforts. These students didn\u2019t just study social issues\u2014they stepped up to address them, embodying the values of inclusion, service, and ethical leadership.<\/p>\n

The closing ceremony celebrated not just the funds raised, but the SEGi College Sarawak students\u2019 ability to rally a campus community around a cause that matters. Representatives from Hope Place expressed heartfelt appreciation, underlining how even small-scale efforts, when fuelled by empathy and initiative, can drive meaningful change for those most in need.<\/p>\n
