SEGi’s Faculty of Education and Social Sciences (FESS) recently brought learning beyond the classroom through a meaningful community engagement activity with the Special Needs Society Kuching. Held on a Monday morning, the initiative involved 20 Bachelor of Education students and two lecturers, creating a powerful hands-on opportunity to understand, engage, and celebrate the strengths of individuals with special needs. More than just a visit, the experience was a transformative journey into the heart of inclusive education.<\/p>\n

In a world where over one billion people\u201415% of the global population\u2014live with some form of disability, it is critical that future educators are not only trained in theory but are also emotionally equipped to foster inclusion in real-world environments. This initiative is part of SEGi\u2019s experiential learning approach, designed to build empathy, compassion, and adaptability\u2014core traits needed to support diverse learners in today\u2019s evolving educational landscape.<\/p>\n

From an energising Zumba session to interactive activities like crafts, vase decoration, and gardening, the event was thoughtfully curated to promote collaboration and joy. Students led each session with care and creativity, engaging actively with the members of the Special Needs Society. These interactions gave them deeper insight into the lived experiences of individuals with disabilities, highlighting the importance of patience, sensitivity, and celebrating every individual\u2019s unique strengths.<\/p>\n

The session was more than a learning experience\u2014it was a reminder that inclusive education begins with understanding and shared humanity. By connecting theory with practice, the engagement strengthened the students\u2019 readiness to champion inclusivity as future educators. It also aligns with Malaysia\u2019s ongoing national commitment to inclusive education, which supports full participation of children with disabilities in mainstream schools.<\/p>\n

This event reinforces SEGi College Sarawak \u2019s role in shaping education professionals who will lead with heart, vision, and purpose. It reflects a wider educational mission\u2014one that sees learning as a tool for transformation, community upliftment, and inclusive nation-building.
