SEGi College Sarawak recently facilitated a transformative learning experience for its Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) students through a field trip to the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre. This visit not only provided an enriching educational opportunity but also aligned seamlessly with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Situated amidst Sarawak’s rich natural environment, the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre has evolved since its establishment in 1997 into a leading institution for biotechnology research. The centre is now at the forefront of efforts to explore and harness the medicinal potential of Sarawak’s diverse biological resources. During the visit, DMLT students were introduced to a vast array of indigenous herbs and plants, gaining invaluable insights into the traditional knowledge that has been passed down through generations. This knowledge is integral to the region’s food, medicine, and health practices.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The field trip also offered students an inside look at the research laboratories where pioneering biotechnological advancements take place. These labs are hubs of innovation, where researchers strive to unlock the medicinal and commercial value of Sarawak’s biodiversity. Through guided tours and interactive sessions, students were able to observe the cutting-edge methodologies and technologies employed in these research efforts, thereby broadening their academic horizons and enhancing their career prospects in medical laboratory technology.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This field trip underscored the importance of biodiversity conservation and the practical application of traditional knowledge in modern healthcare.
