The School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at SEGi College Penang recently organized an experiential learning Cake Workshop featuring a guest pastry chef from G Hotel Gurney. This initiative was specially designed for students from the Certificate in Hotel Operations (CIHO) and Diploma in Culinary Arts (DICA), with a strong emphasis on practical skill development in cake production under real industry guidance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aligned with the subjects Basic Bakery and Pastry, the workshop provided a valuable platform for students to engage directly with industry-standard practices. Under the mentorship of the invited pastry chef from G-Hotel Gurney, students were exposed to professional cake preparation techniques, precision finishing methods, and the operational standards of a hotel pastry kitchen.<\/p>\n

This experiential learning initiative was structured to achieve several key objectives. It aimed to provide hands-on industry exposure through a professional pastry workshop while enhancing students\u2019 technical skills in cake preparation and finishing techniques. In addition, the session introduced students to industry-standard practices in hotel pastry production and strengthened their understanding of cake structure, texture, and presentation. Importantly, the workshop also fostered closer collaboration between academia and industry, reinforcing the partnership between SEGi College Penang and G Hotel Gurney.<\/p>\n

Following the workshop, students were assessed through a practical cake production project as their final assessment. Working in pairs, they were tasked with creating their own cheesecake based on the techniques and knowledge acquired both in class and during the workshop. This activity encouraged students to explore their creativity by developing unique flavour profiles and innovative presentations, translating theoretical knowledge into tangible outcomes.<\/p>\n

This initiative reflects SEGi College Penang\u2019s commitment to working closely with industry partners. Beyond delivering academic knowledge, the institution provides a dynamic platform for students to express their creativity and transform their ideas into realistic culinary products. Through such industry-integrated learning experiences, students are better prepared to meet professional expectations and excel in the hospitality and culinary sectors.<\/p>\n
