It was the result of years of growth, countless hours of practice, and a determination to stay true to his own musical identity.

On 21 June 2026, Levendran reached a major milestone by emerging as the Champion of the Lioncity Beatbox Championships 2026 in Singapore. The annual competition, organised by the 555Beatbox Initiative, brought together talented beatboxers from across the region to compete through wildcard qualifiers, elimination rounds, and head-to-head battles.

His journey to the championship began with a wildcard audition, where participants qualified by submitting performance videos. Levendran impressed the judges and secured 1st place in the wildcard round, earning his place in the main competition. He continued his impressive run by finishing 3rd in the elimination round, advancing to the Top 8.

The battle rounds tested both his technical ability and mental resilience. In the quarter-finals, he defeated a beatboxer from Thailand before overcoming a fellow Malaysian competitor in the semi-finals. He then faced a finalist from Hong Kong in the championship battle, where his performance earned him the title of Lioncity Beatbox Championships 2026 Champion together with a cash prize of SGD800.

Behind the victory was more than a month of disciplined preparation. Although his motivation only fully kicked in two weeks before the competition, his training became relentless. He focused on creating stage-oriented routines, experimenting with musical dynamics, and refining tracks that would deliver a stronger impact during battle performances.

“The tracks were prepared quite last minute, but the practice was non-stop,” he shared.

Equally important was the mental transformation that accompanied his technical preparation. Determined to prove that he could finally win an international competition, Levendran worked on developing a stronger battle mindset and greater confidence on stage.

The pressure, however, was immense.

“I was overthinking a lot because I felt like this was the perfect opportunity to prove myself. I honestly didn’t know what I would do if I lost because of the pressure I put on myself.”

Throughout the event, Levendran remained intensely focused on every battle. Instead of taking in the atmosphere, his attention was fixed on selecting the right routines and executing them as planned. Despite his concentration, he appreciated the welcoming beatbox community and described the competition as having a more intimate atmosphere than many previous events he had attended.

Even after reaching the finals, self-doubt lingered.

“When they were about to announce the winner, I genuinely thought I was going to lose. I felt like I hadn’t performed my best and that my tracks weren’t good enough.”

Hearing his name announced as the champion brought an overwhelming sense of relief and marked a defining moment in his beatbox journey.

Levendran winning LionCity’s beatboxing competition

The achievement carried even greater significance because it represented redemption. His previous international competition in Singapore, the Voices Beatbox Battle, had ended in disappointment after he was eliminated in the Top 8. Returning to Singapore to claim his first international title demonstrated how perseverance and continuous self-improvement can transform setbacks into success.

Levendran’s passion for beatboxing began in late 2018 after discovering beatbox videos online. Eager to improve, he immersed himself in the art form before joining the Malaysian beatbox community in mid-2019, where he found encouragement and mentorship that helped develop both his technical ability and competitive mindset.

Reflecting on his early years, he admits that his initial goal was simply to impress others.

“My beatbox wasn’t authentic. It had no structure and wasn’t musically pleasing.”

Through years of experimentation, experience, and drawing inspiration from music, he gradually developed his own sound by improving his musical structure, rhythm, and pitch. Finding his authentic style ultimately became the turning point in his growth as an artist.

While representing Malaysia did not feel like a burden because beatboxing remains a niche community, the victory has become an important milestone in his career. Rather than viewing it as his greatest achievement, Levendran sees it as the beginning of an even bigger journey.

“This is just a stepping stone. I want to qualify for more competitions around the world by continuing to work harder.”

To aspiring musicians and beatboxers, his advice is simple yet meaningful:

“Explore your authentic side. When your music reflects who you truly are, listeners can genuinely feel it.”

Levendran’s journey demonstrates that success is not simply about winning competitions. It is about embracing continuous learning, overcoming self-doubt, and staying authentic. His victory at the Lioncity Beatbox Championships 2026 is a testament to how perseverance, confidence, and originality can turn years of dedication into an international championship.

For Levendran A/L Thiyagu, a Diploma in Multimedia Design (DiMD) student from the Faculty of School of Communication and Creative Design (SOCCD), success was not built overnight.
